About

VIKKI BLAND

Mental health and relationship counsellor
PhD (Psych), MNZCCA.

I care deeply about how people think and feel about themselves, their lives, and their relationships.

My approach to providing mental and emotional healthcare is underpinned by two core themes: a commitment to using therapeutic approaches with proven success in reducing the impact of mental, emotional and relationship distress; and warmth and respect for the story, humanity, individuality and desired outcomes of every client I have the privilege of meeting.

The two main therapeutic approaches I draw from are EFT (emotionally focused therapy), and person-centered therapy. I hold a PhD in psychology and am a professional mental health and relationship counsellor (MNZCCA).

I am experienced in working with clients over the age of 18 who seek help and support for the following issues: loss, prolonged grief, anxiety, stress, depression, relationship problems, trauma, post-traumatic stress syndrome, anger dysregulation, and feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.

I value the core principles of the spirit of Tiriti O Waitangi – partnership, protection, and participation – and seek to provide a culturally safe, warm and welcoming counselling environment for people from all cultural backgrounds.

As a Christian, I respect the right of every individual to identify and choose the life they wish to lead, and see this choice as a God-given right.

My husband Miles and I have lived in Wānaka for five years, following 27 years working, studying, and raising our children in Auckland. Needless to say, we feel we have landed in the most naturally beautiful place in the world!

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a highly researched, evidence-based, and effective approach that works through a series of stages and steps to create feelings of safety and trust between relationship partners. Couples develop the skills needed to de-escalate the negative patterns and wounds that keep them from feeling disconnected. They learn to realise the underlying emotions that feed negative patterns and begin to understand each other better. From the safer ground that provides, they begin to create new experiences in which they communicate openly and ask for their needs to be met in healthy ways. The EFT therapeutic model has also been developed for use in individual therapy (EFIT) . For more information visit www.nzceft.org

Emotion Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is a relational, attachment-based therapy that helps clients connect with themselves in a secure, gentle and guided way through healing past emotional pain. In emotion focused individual therapy, the therapist guides clients through key emotional experiences that define their sense of self and of others towards a new sense of connection and competence.

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy helps individuals recognize the dominant emotions and patterns in their lives to uncover underlying needs and can help clients build inner resilience and strength towards more fulfilling relationships and enriched lives.

Person-centered therapy, also known as client-based therapy, is a warm, supportive, non-authoritative therapeutic approach. This approach assumes people are their own best experts, and able to discover their own solutions with minimal guidance if they are provided with an emotionally safe, authentic and supportive counselling environment.
Person-centered therapy originated in the work of American psychologist Carl Rogers, who believed that every person is unique and that everyone’s view of his or her own world, and their ability to manage it, should be trusted.
